Absolute Beginner Bellydance Drills & Combos

For anyone who has never taken any bellydance or dancers who want to start at the beginning.  We will do a warm up and then drill new bellydance moves & techniques.  As we progress we will combine moves for short combos to practice. This is a fun, high energy but low impact, class that is a great workout for body and mind. 

This drop in class is offered on the following days & times:

Sundays 2-3pm CST  (May 3,10,17,24,31)

Tuesdays 6-7pm CST  (May 5,12,19,26)

Thursdays 10-11am CST  (May 7,14,21,28)

The Gossamer Veil 101

This workshop will teach you the foundational techniques to create beautiful veil work.  We will cover technique,  recovery tricks for when your veil wont cooperate, and some beautiful veil moves and tricks that you can incorporate into your own dance.  You will need a 3 yard veil, preferably 8mm silk.

This workshop is offered on the following days & times:

Thursday May 7th   12-1pm CST     

Sunday May 24th 3-4pm CST

Fridays 10-11am CST (May 8,15,22,29)

The Gossamer Half Circle Veil 101

This workshop will teach you the foundational techniques to create beautiful veil work that are specific to working with a half circle veil.  We will cover technique,  recovery tricks for when your veil wont cooperate, and some beautiful veil moves and tricks for half circle veil that you can incorporate into your own dance.  You will need a half circle veil, preferably 8mm silk.

Drills:

In this class we will work on developing your bellydance technique while getting a great workout.  I will lead you in warm up exercises, followed by stability & strength exercises such as burpees, sit ups & planks.  We will then move on to practicing foundational bellydance moves and adding them together for short combinations that focus on muscle group isolations, core stabilization, strengthening & lengthening of muscles, sharp & fluid motions, musicality & dance etiquette.  There will not be  choreography to remember but you can easily string together several of the combinations to create your own choreography.

The Beginning Drills class will give more instruction for individual moves with the assumption that you either have never taken a bellydance class before or still need some explanation of the moves.

The Intermediate Drills class expects that you have a basic understanding of the moves. I will not be breaking down the moves but will happily answer any questions if you need a refresher on anything.

Class Attire: 

Please come in yoga pants, leggings or other attire that allows full range of motion. Please no overly baggy shirts, baggy pants or long skirts as it’s important for you and the instructor to see your body positions. Also, a scarf or shawl to tie around your hips is helpful to see your hip movements in the mirror. 

Intermediate Choreography:

In this class we will work on a complex choreography with performance being the ultimate goal.  In addition to working on layering and complexity of movement, we will also integrate props such as veil, fan veils, & finger cymbals.  Students in the Rockford IL or Chicago IL areas are encouraged to join me in performing this choreography at a local event.  Students outside of this area are encouraged to perform either as a soloist or with other Gossamer Arts Bellydance students in your area. 

Class Attire: 

Please come in yoga pants, leggings or other attire that allows full range of motion. Please no overly baggy shirts, baggy pants or long skirts as it’s important for you and the instructor to see your body positions. Also, a scarf or shawl to tie around your hips is helpful to see your hip movements in the mirror. 

Adult Beginning Bellydance

Belly dancing is incredibly empowering.  Women & Men of every size & ability level will have fun while building confidence, strength & grace.   In this class you will learn the Egyptian roots of Bellydance and the modern tribal & fusion styles. Short combinations will be incorporated into drills that focus on muscle group isolations, core stabilization, strengthening & lengthening of muscles, sharp & fluid motions, musicality & dance etiquette. Each 8 week session will work on a new choreography, making this class a great workout for your mind as well as your muscles. No previous dance experience required and great for all fitness levels. (This class can be adapted to accommodate many physical limitations, even for people in wheelchairs.  Please contact Freya to discuss your specific situation.)

Seniors Beginning Bellydance: 55+

Belly dancing is incredibly empowering.  Women and Men of every size & ability level will have fun while building confidence, strength & grace. This class is specifically for Seniors with warm ups designed to work on balance, strength, & stretching while being low impact and gentle on joints. Short combinations will be incorporated into drills that focus on muscle group isolations, core stabilization, strengthening & lengthening of muscles, sharp & fluid motions, musicality & dance etiquette. Each 8 week session will work on a new choreography, making this class a great workout for your mind as well as your muscles. No previous dance experience required and great for all fitness levels. (This class can be adapted to accommodate many physical limitations, even for people in wheelchairs.  Please contact Freya to discuss your specific situation.)

Intermediate Bellydance:

Belly dancing is incredibly empowering.  You will have fun while building confidence, strength & grace.   In this intermediate class we will build upon the foundational moves learned in the Intro class.  Short combinations & choreography will be incorporated into technique and drills making it a great workout for your muscles and your mind.  Choreography will become more complex as we begin to layer multiple moves into the dance or incorporate props such as veils, fan veils, canes, or finger cymbals. Props will be available to borrow in class.  For those who want their own, I will have a limited number of props & hip scarves available for purchase. Previous bellydance experience required. (Either taking the Intro class for at least one session, or  previous training in another bellydance class are acceptable).

Sip & Shimmy:

Get your girlfriends together to have a glass of wine with Freya & bring out your inner sass in this empowering 2 hr workshop! After a short performance of the choreography we are going to work on, Freya will lead you in warm up exercises, followed by learning foundational bellydance moves that range from slow & sexy to fast & funky.  Short movement combinations will then be combined into a short choreography that is appropriate for any fitness level and no prior dance experience is necessary.

Sometimes you want one-on-one lessons to develop a specific technique, or perhaps you can't make any of the classes. About your Instructor:

Freya took her first bellydance class in 2000 and immediately fell in love with this beautiful art form. Over the years she’s had the privilege of studying with some of the world's top dancers including Rachel Brice, Ariella, Sonya Blacker, Zoe Jakes, Jasmin Jahal, Mae the Bellydancer, Christina King and many more. Freya became a semi-professional dancer in 2010 performing with troupes Roe-He, Vagabond and Black Silk Road. As a soloist Freya performed in shows throughout the region including Beast Women, Tribal Revolution, Burning Man Decomp, Angels & Absynth, The Glint, and the Chicago Hafal for Humanity which raised money for Syrian refugees. Freya is most well known for her ethereal & powerful veil routines using both Egyptian & Chinese style veils that she custom makes herself.
